This project involved the interior fit out of an existing shell unit to create a new Topshop store over three storeys.

The works comprised the installation of a new feature circular staircase, refurbishment of an existing lift, sales floor accommodation at basement, ground and first floor levels as well as dedicated stockroom and staff facilities at basement level.

New external shopfronts, entrance doors and signage were also installed.
A sophisticated smoke control system was also needed.

This project involved the interior fit out of a new build shell unit within the One New Change shopping centre adjacent to St. Pauls Cathedral to create a new Topshop / Topman store over three storeys as well as a Dorothy Perkins unit at ground floor only.

The works comprised the installation of two new escalators, a new feature staircase, new customer / goods lift, sales floor accommodation at basement, ground and first floor levels, banks of changing rooms as well as dedicated stockroom and staff facilities. New external signage and illumination in accordance with agreed design parameters.

Markwick Architects was appointed by Arcadia to complete the design and fit out of a new retail unit within a new build extension to an existing shopping centre.

On this occasion Markwick Architects worked alongside external designers to develop a new brand design statement.

This project involved the interior fit out of a new shell unit within the new Westfield Stratford shopping centre to create a new Topshop / Topman store over two storeys.

The works comprised the installation of two new escalators, two new feature staircases, new customer / goods lift, sales floor accommodation at first floor and mezzanine floor levels, banks of changing rooms as well as dedicated stockroom and staff facilities. New mall entrance facilities and signage. The entrance was deliberately designed so as to avoid shopfront glazing. Only night time security shutters separate the unit from the mall

This project involved the fit out of a new build retail unit on a dedicated retail park The unit sells clothing on the ground floor (Outfit) and homewares (BHS) on the mezzanine level. A mezzanine level public café was also included. The works also comprised the installation of a escalator alongside a new customer feature staircase as well as a new customer lift and a new goods only lift. The fit out of new sales floor accommodation at ground and mezzanine floor levels, as well as dedicated stockroom and staff facilities. New main entrance signage was also incorporated. The unit achieved a BREEAM excellent rating.

Markwick Architects was appointed to implement a predetermined design concept for the refurbishment of the flagship Topshop / Topman store at 214 Oxford Street, London. The company was responsible for the preparation of all construction drawings and information to enable the main contractor and their sub-contractors’s to achieve the built reality.
This included a second floor extension as well as extensive structural alterations to accommodate new escalators, lift extensions etc. as well as adapting and updating the existing services installations, all within the restrictions imposed by ongoing construction work in a building whose original fabric had already been changed during previous refurbishments and at the same time keeping the shop trading throughout.

This project involved the extensive alteration, extension and redevelopment of a former BHS building into a new Primark store. Markwick Architects was involved from the initial feasibility, through to tender and construction stages. Extensive works were undertaken to strip the unit back to its basic shell, removing all existing services and asbestos.

This project involved the strip out of a former two storey Woolworths retail unit within a shopping centre and the conversion to a BHS retail store. Markwick Architects was involved in the project from initial feasibility studies, preparation of tender documentation and subsequent construction on site.
Structural alterations included two new lifts, two new escalators and new façade works. Two floors of retail space were created including a public café.

This project involved the combination of two existing retail units on a dedicated white goods retail park to create a single Home Store unit selling all manner of homewares. Part of an existing mezzanine was retained and extended. A mezzanine level public café was also included. The works also comprised the installation of a new feature staircase as well as a private staff only staircase, a new customer lift and a new goods only lift. The fit out of new sales floor accommodation at ground and mezzanine floor levels, as well as dedicated stockroom and staff facilities. New main entrance feature portals were incorporated as well as new external signage.

This project comprised the extensive redevelopment of a former NEXT building for conversion into a new BHS store in Newcastle city centre. Markwick Architects was involved in the project from feasibility studies, through to handover. Extensive structural works were undertaken in the removal of an existing escalator and also in the demolition of the existing external façade and the construction of a new full height glass and York stone façade. The works also involved the reconfiguration of the building’s vertical circulation as well as the construction of a rooftop plant room, a public café as well as the creation of four floors of retail trading.

This project involved the insertion of a new mezzanine deck within an existing double height office space to create additional space for 54 desks with associated meeting rooms, cellular offices, kitchen and toilets.
The existing space was located above the main Topshop/Topman shop unit at 214 Oxford Street. Careful co-ordination was required in order to insert a new mezzanine deck within the existing space whilst ensuring that it was structurally compliant and that the existing services were suitably adapted
Numerous feasibility studies were carried out in order to ascertain the most cost effective design solutions.

This project involved the installation of a new mezzanine floor within an existing warehouse to create additional office and kitchen space.

In early 2012 Markwick Architects purchased a former dairy building in south Croydon.

The existing two storey building was refurbished extensively in order to create 970ft2 of office space on the first floor with ancillary shower, toilet, kitchen and meeting room space on the ground floor to create a dedicated environment to satisfy the growing needs of the architectural practice.

Markwick Architects moved into the building in autumn 2012 and it has been our office ever since.

This project involved the complete refurbishment of four listed Regency properties. The properties were in a very poor condition with low quality retail units on the ground floor and mostly unoccupied spaces on the first and second floors as well as pigeon and dry rot infestation to the roof areas. Markwick Architects and the client (British Land) worked closely with the local planning authority and conservation department to refurbish the unit to a high standard.
Extensive structural works were undertaken to combine the four properties at ground floor level to create a single overall retail unit that was later occupied by Cult Clothing. The first, second and roof levels were converted to residential apartments.

This project involved the application of planning permission and Building Regulations approval for a new restaurant venture in Aylesbury. The proposals included using the ground floor level of an existing Grade 11 Listed Building (dating from 1765) as a new restaurant offering specialist casual dining throughout the day and evening.

Markwick Architects role was to obtain planning permission for a new shopfront design, external advertisement and Listed Building consent as well as Building Regulations approval.

All permissions were granted in September 2014.

Markwick Architects was appointed by National Grid to obtain planning permission for a new build electrical sub-station within a very tight urban site in north London.
The building is part of a larger London wide project to reinforce the electricity capacity of the capital to allow for future growth in the city and the south east. The scheme was developed over several years culminating in the granting of planning permission in 2013.
During the protracted design development process the scheme changed considerably and the development eventually included commercial / retail units as well as private and social housing on a separate part of the site. The whole project is expected to be completed by 2018.

This project involved Markwick Architects designing, obtaining planning permission for and building a new build electrical sub-station on an urban infill site in central London.
The building is purpose built and protracted negotiations with the local authority planning department resulted in the granting of planning permission and its subsequent completion five years later.
The new substation was needed to reinforce electrical infrastructure for London and the south east.

Markwick Architects was invited by National Grid to take part in an architectural competition to design a new build electrical sub-station for a new off shore wind farm development in Kent.

Over 200 turbines were to be sited off the Kent coast and the substation was designed to receive the energy from the turbines and convert it to electricity for integration into the National Grid.
